Saturday morning the National Weather Service Chicago office canceled the southeastern tier of winter headlines (Winter Weather Advisories) where lingering snowfall rates were expected to be too light to meaningfully accumulate. Temperatures were also above freezing, and any accumulation would have required very intense snowfall rates.
A last-minute wobble/sidestep to the storm track occurred, displacing the axis of highest amounts northwest by about 50 miles. According to NWS Chicago, an incredibly impressive snowfall gradient was evident in morning snowfall reports. Amounts under a inch across southeastern Lake, McHenry, Kane, DeKalb, and Lee counties increased to near 5-6 inches closer to the state line. Snowfall amounts over a foot occurred across Carroll and Stephenson counties. Along with Jo Daviess County, Carroll and Stephenson counties are the three most northwest counties in Illinois.
The NWS Chicago office kept the Winter Storm Warning active in the far northwest area of the state as lingering deformation band snow remained. Since impacts were expected continue to ease even in far northwest Illinois, NWS Chicago noted that the Winter Storm Warning may be canceled entirely prior to the formal 1:00 PM end time, but as of 11:55 a.m., a Winter Storm Warning was still in effect over Galena, Illinois in Jo Daviess County.
Otherwise, additional light snow will overspread northern Illinois this morning, with rain/snow or all rain farther south. No travel impacts were expected outside of the current headline areas.
Additionally, radar mostly cleared in northeast Illinois all the way to west of Rockford and Peoria Saturday shortly after 7:00 a.m. Last night’s forecast indicated snow would begin in Arlington Heights about 7:00 a.m. Saturday, but the radar near Arlington Heights was already nearly clear except for sparse precipitation at 8:25 a.m. Intermittent snow flurries were observed with the sparse radar images.
Very light snow — about 0.125 inch — fell around 6:00 a.m. in Arlington Heights, and the snow was completely melted by 10:00 a.m. The Winter Weather Advisory was scheduled to expire at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, but it expired early as CARDINAL NEWS predicted in an earlier article.
Weather Radar in northeast Illinois was clear all the way to west of Rockford and Peoria.
