Firefighters at the scene of a plane crash, and citizen rescuer Isaiah Grass describes helping the injured pilot after his plane crashed in Busse Woods about 6:42 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2023 (CARDINAL NEWS) YouTube Tips ⓘ

Police and firefighters and paramedics from Elk Grove Village and Chicago and police from the Cook County Forest Preserve responded about 6:42 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2023 to a report of a plane crash in Busse Woods near Elk Grove Village.

Multiple people reported the plane crash from different locations, and the precise location was not initially known. Elk Grove firefighters were able to pinpoint the location thanks to a call from the pilot with the help of citizen rescuer Isaiah Grass who used the pilot’s phone, and then quickly directed firefighters to the precise scene when they arrived.

Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Richard Mikel said the plane crash was located near Grove 26. He said we were very fortunate that the plane didn’t crash into the populated neighborhood just east of the forest preserve. The crash scene was also not far from Elk Grove High School.

The pilot was on approach to O’Hare International Airport from an unknown location in Iowa. The pilot was transporting non-hazardous cargo.

Emergency light trucks were assigned to the scene, and mutual aid police officers were also assigned to secure the scene overnight.

The NTSB will begin looking at the aircraft and crash scene Saturday morning.
